I've gotten calls from them. No message is left. I presume this is a scam.

Message that IRS was suing me and that to get more information about the case file, call their department at (912) 307-0762. Caller ID indicated that call originated from Hazlehurst, Georgia. This is absolutely a scam. I am a registered Tax Preparer with IRS and I have discussed similar calls with IRS. IRS may return a call, e.g. you call them and are on hold and given the opportunity to be called back or continue to be on hold for next available agent. This is the only call back I am aware of. IRS will never call you on any issue where they initiate the call. If there is an issue where you have fines or penalties associated with a particular tax return, you will get a letter by mail. It will have a code for particular type of tax issue, such as CP2000. The first letter will come via standard mail. If you fail to respond, the second or third letter will be by certified mail that you have to sign for. IRS gives you several chances to either dispute or pay what the letter says you owe. If after all that, it is possible that IRS would bring a lawsuit against you, but never by phone. Your notification would be by certified mail. Before that happened, IRS would likely seize access to your bank accounts. That happened to one of my clients, where all his accounts were frozen and a lien was placed on his home. I got everything straightened out, and it turned out IRS owed him refunds. But because he had not filed 3 years of tax returns, IRS was really ***** and came down on him really hard. A lawsuit never was on the table.
