Scam Call! Male with a Middle Eastern accent said that he was from the Federal Family Education Loan Program and I was eligible for a federal grant. He assured me that this was a grant and I didn’t have to pay it back. He said it could be used to buy a house or for education. I said,”Great, send it to Navient since I owe $50,000 in student loans.” Him: “What dollars?” Me: “What’s the confirmation number for the grant?” Him: “You have a confirmation number?” Me: “No, you have the confirmation number because you are giving me the grant.” Him: ” I just need some details…” Me: “So do I. How much is the grant?” Dead silence for a few seconds, then he stutters, “U-u-u-h-h, arou-nd $5,000.” Me: “You can’t give me an exact figure for this grant? I mean it is already approved, right?” Him: “Yeah, I just need some details…” Me: “OK, you said that this was a federal organization, right? Well, I’d like you to take the grant that you are giving to me and pay my Navient student loans.” Silence. Me: “You do know who Navient is? Him: “Uh, yeah.” Me: “Well, you ought to since they are the primary holders for federal student loans and you told me this is a federal organization. So, are you going to pay Navient with the grant?” Him: “Yeah.” Me: "Really, that’s great!" Him: “I just need some details…” Me: “What was the name of this organization again?” He hangs up.
