Scam! The IRS will not contact you by phone, only by mail. I wrote down the phone number so I could report the call to the FTC and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). If Iâ€™d been concerned that maybe I owed money to the IRS, I knew that I could check with the IRS directly by calling 1-800-829-1040.

Got an automated voicemail at about four in the morning and then called me again later. Most likely spam, I got a rude man on the other line when I called back to try and see if it was important, who was very disparaging about my hearing disability.
